1) We usually use Celsius but for some things we use Kelvin

2) Celsius or Kelvin

3) Kelvin begins at zero, this is called absolute zero.

4) The British use Celsius now, but the older folks still remember Fahrenheit.

5) The thermometer is filled with a fluid that expands when it is heated forcing it to rise up the tube to record the temp. When it cools the liquid contracts and falls. Or course it has been calibrated properly.

The SI unit of temperature is the kelvin, named after Lord Kelvin. It is an absolute temperature scale, which means that 0 kelvin is absolute zero, which is so cold we have never been able to cool anything that cold. The English(and American) unit of temperature is the Fahrenheit. 32 degrees Fahrenheit is the freezing point of water, 212 degrees is its boiling point. All I'll say about how a thermometer works is that the liquid used in it expands when heated and shrinks when cooled. Think about it.
