I moved into a shitty room in a frat house because I had no options on the fifth payed 460, and 225. A hundred fifty is refundable, but I couldn't stand it and just found a new place. It is month to month, but now I remember them saying to give twenty days notice, I didn't. Am I in trouble or did they just say this so they could have time to find new renters. Is there anything they can or will do? or something I can say to lessen the blow like make up a story or something?

legally, on a month to month rent - if you did not give notice, you can be made to pay the next months rent, pro-rated to allow for the 20 days notice. More than likely they will just keep your deposit.

Legally, both tenant and landlord are required to give at least a 30-day notice. If, you didn't give notice, and moved out anyway, you are not in trouble, but they have a right to keep the deposit to apply towards your last months' rent.

You don't need to make up a story. You are not required to stay in a room/house/apt./whatever, especially if the living conditions are deplorable. You do not need a reason to leave, so making up a story isn't necessary.

I am unable to figure out from what you said, if you have a refund coming, or if you owe them money. If you owe them rent money, they can take you to small claims court. If they owe you a refund of any kind, they have 30 days to give it to you.

However, if you saw any illegal activities that were going on in the house where you rented a room (like underage drinking, drug use, stolen property in the home, rape of students by other drunken students, etc.) it is more than likely that they will not try to take you to court.

If they do, I'm sure you must have seen something going on in there. . . after all, it is a "frat house". Get my drift?

Yeah, honestly, it's a frat house, i'm sure they wont bug you or whatever if it's decent they probably have other people wanting to move in. However, I would cover your *** and call them just to make sure all is well just because I use to rent out rooms and stuff and you really can get screwed over by renters. Be cool next time and give notice. You moved into a frat house, i mean really, what did you expect??

Did you have a written lease? If so, that is the binding authority over the tenant/landlord relationship. Read it carefully for answers. If not, the landlord/other tenants will have trouble enforcing the required notice. You should consult your state statutes for the laws regarding landlord/tenant relationships whether you have a contract or not. You may be liable for another month's rent at the frat house.

In my experience it is always best to tell the truth and avoid making up stories to get out of bad situations. You'll feel better about yourself if you deal honestly with others.

If you signed a years lease....they could come after you for some of that rent...even if someone moved in the very next day. A 20 day notice is not all that much and it is so they can find someone else to rent the place.

What does your rental agreement say? You had to have signed a rental agreement, it will tell you how many days notice you have to give and what penalties there will be if you don't give notice. That is a legal and binding contract and whether you make up a story or not it isn't going to matter, they may have the right to withold your deposit or to sue you for another month's rent. It depends on what the agreement YOU signed says.

I think as long as you didnt sign a lease stating for you to give 20 days notice your in the clear. It would be best for you to check your local laws.

They want to ensure they can find a new renter before your rent check is over.

If you didn't give notice you probably won't get your deposit back.
