When I first took the SAT, my score was low in the mid 1700s but then I got the sat guide from TutorFox: http://www.tutorfox.com/satguide.html and my score went up to 2190 (800 math, 760 writing, 630 reading). I highly recommend this guide for anyone wishing to get a higher SAT score.

Another thing to consider is that if you take them in October, you would have another three months of school (vocabulary acquisition, math skills, etc.) in your arsenal. The SAT takes the highest scores, so even if you score the same on the verbal and essay, but go up 50 points on math, it will take your highest math score.
SAT Online has a lot of practice tests that will narrow your focus to what you need to work on.
The NEW SAT (the test you took) is based on a 2400 scale, not 1600, as the previous responder assumed. You should definitely try to improve on your 1560.

Studying vocabulary directly does not work very well. The best thing you can do to improve vocabulary is to read the classics, New York Times, and other high-quality literature and material. Also, listen to NPR talk radio (not local shock jock or Howard Stern radio)--NPR uses more advanced language. A 1650 on the new SAT will qualify you for state schools, but if you are reaching higher, you'll need a higher score. Check my source below for score rankings. I would retake it. Good luck.

You cannot score higher than 1600 on your SAT. There is a verbal section worth 800 and a math section worth 800. Maybe you are thinking of the SAT II?
Whatever your score, it can usually be improved by studying - but not always, sincethere is such a wide range of material that can be included in the tests. I studied between the practice and real SAT and my score actually decreased by 10 points.

It's possible your score would be slightly higher. It's always a good idea to prepare for these tests, even though the questions might be slightly different. However, the principles of them will be similar. Start studying! Good luck!
