okay so i got my first fish yesterday from PetCo. i didnt really know what i was picking so i got this nice blue betta fish (male). when i brought it home i put it in the bowl that i bought fo rit. its a glass bowl about the size of a basketball and i put blue marbles on the bottom. its really pretty anyways.. i noticed that it had two small pencil dot sized holes on its tail. and when i looked closer, i noticed there was this gray lump on its top fin. but the fish is really active and eats very well. i gave it 4 pellets in the morning and 4 at night. and it's really responsive. the temperature of the water is about 69 or 70 degrees. its kinda low but my room is cold and there isnt anything i can do about that. i think that the gray lump and the holes were there when i first got it but im not sure. any suggestions on what they are?

i've already closed all my air vents, brought in a dehumidifier which gives off heat, and put a heat lamp over the bowl. temp isnt a problem anymore..

Please take the heatlamp away, it will cook your fish if it's not far enough away
THIS IS AN EMERGENCY SOLUTION and is exactly what i did, and my betta is now since 6 months with us:
Your best bet is getting a 5 gallon tank for $30 which comes already with a filter and buying a 25 watt heater, which is about $10-15 which should be submursible and adjustable , and set up the tank with conditioned water
Plug everything in and put your heater in, and set it at 78 degrees.
let it sit like that for at least 24 hours and then check the temperature, if the temperature is fine, take out your betta into a plastic bag with the old water and float the bag for at least 2 hours, and put every 15-30 minutes a half cup of the new tank water into your bag
After 2 hours net him into the tank and watch him
Also your tank will go through a cycle process, so you need to watch your ammonia levels constantly, if it gets to high do a waterchange of 25% with a small gravel siphon
When your tank is finally cycled, you should have ammonia and nitrite reading's at "0" and nitrate under .20ppm
Hope that helps
Good luck

The temperature is the main thing I am concerned about. A betta needs a tropical temperature, meaning upper seventies to low eighties. The betta should really be in a tank, and you really should get one. But the cycling process takes about 6 weeks. Until then, shut the air vent off in your room. I believe that the animals should always come first, even if that means you have to suffer a little to make it happen. If you are a girl, just wear an oversized tee shirt to bed. If you are a guy, sleep in your boxers if you can. If you are an overly hot person, turn the ceiling fan on the low or medium setting.

you dont could desire to purchase yet another tank merely bypass to walmart or petsmart and purchase a gold fish bowl and he or she could be chuffed that way she would be in a position to consume and don't situation approximately gettin attacked! If a woman that wasn’t ripe, or waiting for spawning, could have entered a men tank, it’s conceivable that she could’ve been attacked, as non-ripe women human beings at the instant are not tolerated in the place of the nest. by employing not fleeing, a woman shows her readiness to spawn. specific, some situations while you at the instant are not careful whilst attempting too breed bettas, the male will attack the female and he can injure the female, the ladies human beings are plenty smaller than the boys. A Male and a woman: in the wild, women human beings sidestep men, different than throughout mating. whilst cohabiting in tanks, men could kill women human beings, and are generally stored aside until eventually (a) they're juvenile siblings, (b) they're breeding, (c) there's a partition, or (d) the tank is sufficiently massive for the female to flee attack. in many situations, in the past breeding, breeders use this type of field to permit lady exhibit without risking harm by employing the male. 2 or extra women human beings: Bettas at the instant are not education fish, yet in a extensive tank with many hiding areas, lady bettas can cohabit. whilst 2 women human beings share a tank, one in many situations bullies the different, whether, 4 or extra women human beings will set up a hierarchy permitting non violent co-life, although, women human beings residing in community could desire to be monitored for aggressive women human beings.

Bettas do not need a tropical temperature. Heat lamp is going to cook your beta. Betas origionally come from rice paddies. Sorry, but the orient is not tropical.
Here are some websites about bettas.
