I believe the suzuki SV650 is a great starter bike. 10 years ago I would have said an EX500. But I believe the SV offers more power to keep it longer, but it rides very predictable for new riders.

If this is your first bike, stay under 1200 cc
It won't get out from under you. Any bike you buy should come with adequate stock brakes, but the truth is . . . you are the only real safety feature on your motorcycle. Ride wisely and hopefully your helmet won't get "used"

I agree with the SV650 and now you can even get it with ABS
