To all those who answered in the negative I would like to remind you that when we had National Service we did not have the yob culture or people beating up our Grans on the street. Yobs lack respect and that starts with a lack of respect for their parents and themselves. National Service would instill respect in both themselves and others. Bring it back I say!

No, it might be good for society but it wouldn't help the armed forces. It's not like the 1950s; all the forces are a fraction of the size they used to be and nearly everyone is on operations, preparing to go on operations, or very busy in support roles.; there's nobody spare to train thousands of unwilling recruits.

By the time a yobbo is 18 it's a bit late to start installing discipline. If some parents can't be trusted to control kids then we need to ensure that other adults can - teachers, the police, shopkeepers, neighbours - all should have the right/obligation to keep kids in check.

The problem is its only part of a bigger problem. 1952 saw an explosion of TV sets. Family life changed. No longer Saturday flicks, Sunday school, family meals around the table. Not only did it disrupt life it showed people the American Dream. Flash cars, big houses, money beach holidays.
We forgot about family. We no longer have that security of a childhood of innocence. Going to Sunday school being taught right from wrong. Sowing respect to the local Bobby who lived on your street and knew you better than you knew yourself. School a place you attended and you again showed respect or the head gave you the cane. As a teenager you worried that if you did wrong you would go to Borstal.
Now family life is gone for many. Police are like rocking horse S**t you never see it. They no longer seem part of the local society. School since the left wing teachers took over in the 1970's is a joke. Its all lets be cool. No lets learn or be punished. If you leave school at 16 without a job or education place then yes National Service is the place. Cost less than the wasted years many Yobs will spend on street corners doing drugs and robberies. Wake up Britain before its too late. We can see it so why are our leaders so blind?

Hi!

While I think you are on the right lines, I'm not sure the old format of national service is right for today. Still, there is something to be said for giving young people an experience that will challenge them and bring out their character shortly after they leave school. This could include other forms of service and not just the military, such as a couple of years spent between groups like the forestry commission, police, medical or nursing care or improving the environment. It would also be helpful to bring back mentoring and apprenticeship schemes.

Good wishes.

Reading all these good answers both for & Against. its great to open a hornets nest.
My suggestion will no doubt shake the nest more but hey ho!
i think it could be good to send the Yobbo's into conflict zones. they are good at threatening old Ladies & other defensless people. let them try to pick on someone with an AK47. plus also as i had been in the Royal Artillary its always good to have more Cannon Fodder so it keeps the proper trained forces to clear up.

No.

Nice idea, but it won't work.

I agree it would very likely solve a lot of the problems in this country, and a chav with a decent shot of military discipline might actually turn into a useful human, but there's one small problem.

Your taxes, and everyone else's, would get even higher to pay for it. It simply is not feasible anymore, not in a country where the total numbers across all the Armed Services add up to peanuts.
We cannot afford it.
And in any case, the military has been so brought into line with civilian rules health and safety rules basic training. Someone not trained as a physical instructor is not allowed to issue press ups as punishment. You can pass out from Naval basic training without being fully fit as to not do so would be unfair. It just means the Navy wastes cash training wasters who aren't fit for the Service only to boot them out at a later date under 'services no longer required.'

No, this is definitely not the answer. Those with money would find ways to avoiding serving (Bush with Vietnam) and it would make the so-called 'Yobbos' fitter and ironically well trained in handling weapons.

So much for easy quick fix solutions promoted by certain politicians and are newspapers (comics).

Sorry, but Jeanimus has a point.

It is also like suggesting the school leaving age should be 18 not 16, or raise the drinking age etc.

All of this means nothing unless it is enforced.

We have the laws to change our country back to how it was already, we do not need more rules or laws or gimmicks.

What we need are strong law abiding coppers on the streets who are trained to do a job well.

Not the thick thugs who pick on motorists and hide behind desks we have at the moment.

The police in England are scum, replace them with people who care and we might have a chance.

No, the military needs to focus on winning wars which requires dedicated career people. What good does a guy who is in and out in a year or two do a modern military? Killing people efficiently and solving social problems are two different things.

Why visit these yobs on the military, the military want dedicated professionals not the scumbags that go around with knives and guns. Lets have some proper punishment and make prisons uncomfortable, maybe they will think twice about re-offending.
