Good time for spying on Praying Mantiss.
Look on the ceiling of porch at night with light on. Female is much larger than male and can be green or brown.
Most common form is the Chinese Mantis. Do not keep the insect very long if you catch because this is mating time.
The female mates with & consumes male, lays eggs, stays with the eggs and then dies.
In the Spring, the eggs hatch. Don't bring the eggs in the house to hatch because you won't be able to find enough small food, besides, mantisses are useful in nature.
Babies will consume each other, when not enough food is available. Helped a Science teacher hatch some last Autumn. The majority of them died.

Go at dusk in grassy areas maybe tall grass. Get a white sheet or pillow case and just sweep the grass. You never know what you'll find. Males are browner and smaller.

Leave it alone, it's probably waiting for darkness to fall. If it flew right now it would definitely have a bull's eye on it for hunting birds.

Is your "Kung Fu" strong? ( o _ 0 ) If not, then I'm afraid you're not a worthy opponent for the mighty Praying Mantis.
( ^ _ ^ ) Just kidding. Good luck on finding them.
