they have their tip jars out.... do they get paid regular wages? also, some sonic drive thru, to go.... ( not where you park and eat in your car) also, how to handle this.... there's a china restaurant (buffet) we frequent, if you give them $20.00, they ask if you want your change back.... why don't they wait and see if you leave a tip on the table? i see the waitresses follow their customers to the register, and then wait around for a tip....

Tipping is never required except in the case of restaurants that post signs stating that a gratuity is added to the check for groups over a certain size, usually six or eight diners.

In theory, everyone works for a regular wage and no one works for free. In practice, this is not an absolute.

Usually in fast food restaurants, the pay will range from minimum wage up to an amount that is probably not enough for a single employee to rent an apartment AND buy food. Those who work in sit down service restaurants may make minimum wage or less depending on what state they work in. From what I've read here, some states allow a "servers wage" which may not be enough to fill your gas tank after an eight hour shift (I have not taken the time to confirm this).

Here's my general rule:

1) Sit down restaurants - I tip between 15 and 25% depending on the quality of service. Sometimes I like to be the servers #1 table, other times, I simply want to be left alone. I always let them know at the beginning of the meal and if they accommodate me, they'll get a better tip.

2) Buffet restaurants - I usually tip $1 to $3 per guest at my table. Minimal service gets $1 while keeping my drink filled and tabled cleared of dirty plates gets $3 (remember, that's per guest).

3) Fast Food - This depends on what I'm ordering and where I'm at. Off the menu board items get no tip. Custom built items could receive $1 in the tip jar.

4) Hovering servers - may or may not get a tip based on service. However, I would be inclined to not patronize the business again. If I'm ever asked if I would like my change back, I always say "YES, please".

It is your money. Spend it as you sit fit. At the same time, to paraphrase - Tip others as you would like to be tipped.

At a buffet you should tip your server if the service is good. I would not tip as much as I would in a full service restaurant, because frankly the server does not provide as much service!

As to a place like Subway, or any drive thru or fast food place, I do not tip. The clerks there are paid to do the job, and are not providing anything that even is remotely like restaurant service. I treat tip jars in such places the same as I do beggers on the street. I ignore them!

If a server at any restaurant asks me if I want change back, I automatically cut the tip! I will still tip, but the amount will be less! I had one server in a restaurant that took the check folder and asked me that. The check was for about $55, and I had paid with a hundred dollar bill! I looked at him and asked him if he thought I was crazy! His service had been excellent, and most likely he would have gotten a $15-$20 tip. Instead he got $5. I told him that his asking if I wanted change was the reason that I cut his tip. I also asked him to send the manager over, and told the manager that I tip well, but I do not want to be pressured for a tip! The next time I was in there, I noticed that all the wait staff had stopped asking that question!

If a waiter was to follow me to the cash register to try to get a tip, they would get nothing! The management would be told of the reason that I was not planning on returning to that establishment

You don't HAVE to leave a tip anywhere.
We have a Ryan's and a Bonanza, both are buffet serve.
Someone brings you your drinks and clean plates for your next trip.
If they don't have an 'attitude", if they have been on top of their game and anticipate my needs, I MAY leave a tip.
But if I see a "tip jar" that's a turn off for me.
I automatically refuse to leave a tip in a tip jar.
Those tips are split with everyone.
I wasn't helped by everyone.
I want my tip to go to the person that helped me.
Also, I HATE when they ask "do you need change". This, it seems, has become common practice. I think it's rude.
Of course I need change, unless I tell you to keep it.
A server following you to the register is rude too.
I hate to say it, as I was a waitress, I wouldn't leave anything if I felt I was being harassed for my "tip money".
In the end, tipping is up to the customer.
Whether you do or don't tip is ALWAYS up to you.

At buffets, if someone brings the drinks and refills I do leave a tip. At Subway, if they have a tip jar, it is against company policy and aside from that fact I find it tacky.

Genaraly speaking if the staff brings your food and drinks to your table i will tip. Subway does not bring anything to the table so I would not tip there.
