Writing an opinion piece, is it a good way to make- for the lack of a better word. Easy money? I have a few pieces of writing I was think about sending off to a news-paper or something. I was just wondering is writing an opinion piece good way to make some money. Any advice would help. . .

Breaking onto the opinion page is going to be hard. In order to convince editors to give you a steady column, you have to have experience (meaning clips, writing samples, etc.) or a great connection. If you try to sell one timely, well-written piece to a local newspaper, you will have a shot at getting it published, but editors get lots and lots of submissions. Most of them are not good. You have to find a way to seperate yourself. Are you an expert in some area? That would help. Even if you do get published, most newspapers aren't going to pay what I'd call "good money." Maybe $75 or $100 at a bigger paper for a piece.

First start off with something along the lines of this. Saying you may not understand why Muslim women wear a scarf or hijab. well I'm here to explain that to you. The entire headscarf started off long before Islam. It was a Semitic cultural dress. And in fact it was an insult not to wear a head covering in Semitic Arab-Jewish culture. Even for men. Then explain the entire reason why. Modestly, culture and all that. Then say just look at the most Arabs today. Men cover up as well. Have you ever seen Saudi, Kuwaiti or Emirate men? Then explain that today there are 2billion Muslims and that the hijab is worn and all places. Then say many non-Muslims were it to. In Arab churches women always were a head covering, or they used to at least. And that women in southern Russia and all around west central Asia were a headscarf every minute of the day. And it is mostly cultural, although the Islamic influence on that area is huge. Well thats my 2-cents. Inshallah you will do good.

It depends on what you consider easy money. Most magazines, anthologies, newspapers pay very little. Some pay in the 1 - 5 cent a word scale. Some pay in the 5 - 25 dollar range. Perhaps if you can convince a local paper to offer you a regular column you could make more. It is a way to get your name out there and your foot in the door, but it will not make you rich. Honestly, considering the time it takes to produce a polished piece, you could make more at Mc Donald's. But give it a try. It is worth the experience. Pax - C
