I'll be 19 in less than a month and I'm not at all happy with my height at a little bit over 5'6. I eat fairly well and I also exercise regularly. My exercising has led me to a supplement called Glutamine that in addition to aiding the development of muscles (or lack of soreness, really) also apparently boosts growth hormone up to 400%. Since I'm trying desperately to gain a boost in height, I'll be taking this supplement every night before I go to bed in addition to post-workout...which isn't supposed to cause any problems, as Glutamine is a pretty safe supplement. My question is, what are the chances that taking this before bed will have any affect at all on my height?

I know growth hormone is released naturally in sleep, but I'm also aware that at 19 years old my chances of approaching normal height are all but gone. Anyone care to elaborate on the actual biology behind this situation? Or maybe share stories of 19 yr + who've experienced growth in height.

You still have one more growth spurt left. Men get their last one somewhere between 21 and 25. You won't stop growing completely until you're about 25. It's women who stop growing at 16 or 18. As for taking the supplement, please stop. Messing with your growth hormone is dangerous business. You could mess yourself up for life by causing a pituitary tumor or making your body stop producing growth hormone all together. Your body needs GH to repair and replace damaged and worn-out cells, not just to grow.

As for actual stories, my dad grew 2 inches at age 21.

By the way, 5'6" is a good height for guys.

I've heard of men still growing until the age of 25, so don't give up all hope. It probably depends on your family, though, so ask your dad and your uncles when they stopped growing. If they are all also 5'6", that might be as good as you're going to get. You have some genetic potential for height, and you'll probably get there as long as you eat properly. But no matter how properly you eat, you're not going to exceed that unless you take growth hormones or something. And I doubt a doctor would give you growth hormone for being a 5'6 adult male.

Women most often discontinue growing at 15. At the age of 19 additional development (an awfully tiny amount possibly) remains to be remotely feasible however very unlikely. Maybe you need a miracle. For functional functions you can count on that 156 cm is your height peak.

I'm not quite sure how to answer this. If I were you, I'd try to accept my height. Whether your tall or small, it can be an advantage. If your concerned that people will only like you for your looks, hanging out with them isn't what you want. If you think your not that great in appearance, you can be grateful if people accept with who you are. But really, height isn't everything, I know this probably doesn't help much, but I hope you have some better answer coming your way 0=)

Too late, you are already "normal height". Your height is more determined by your genes than by what you eat, as long as you have had a healthy diet for the past 19 years. Why are you wanting to become abnormally tall anyway?
