Ok so i have tried all of these numbers and ways to figure it out but i am definatley not coming up with the right answer. The question is :

A veterinarian has 100 ft of fencing to construct 6 dog kennels by first building a fence around a rectangular region, and then then subdividing that region into 6 smaller rectangles by placing five fences parallel to one of the sides. Express the total area A, of the kennels as a functions x, where x is the length of one of the seven parallel fences.

I don't even understand what it's asking me really. Help?

There are 7 x's -- the 5 inside and two outside.

What's left is 100 - 7x. Divide this by two and you have the length of the large rectangle.

A(x) = x(100-7x)/2

let x be the width so 7x = length ot the 7 parallel fences
So (100 -7x)/2= L = length of rectangle
A= x*L = x(100-7x)/2 = (100x-7x^2)/2 = 50x -3.5x^2

let x be the width and y be the length

the periemter is the sum of the 7 width's and 2 lengths

100 = 7x + 2y

Area = widht * length
Area = xy

solve for y
100 = 7x + 2y
100 - 7x = 2y
y = 50 - 3.5x

Area = x(50 - 3.5x)
Area = 50x - 3.5x^2
