Hello,
Baking Soda is also Sodim Bi-carbonate, it is a natural salt used in many applications such as cooking, cleaning and deodorzing.
I use it in baking. I also use it for cleaning, it's a great mild scrub for sinks, toilets and bath tubs. You can sprinkle it on your carpet and let it sit the vacuum to freshen it. You can put some in a bowl in the fridge to absorb smells. You can sprinkle on the bottom of the cat box under the littler to help with kitty smells. You can pour some in the bath tub when you take a bath as it is a great natural moisturizer. It is also great for getting grease, sap or other sticky things off your hands!
Check out the link below to Arm and Hammer for TONS of ways to use Baking Soda around the home!

Baking soda is Natrium Bicarbonate, use for making cookies or cake (small amount). Now, many household use it to get rid of smell in the fridge and for cleaning the sink, stainless steel, bath tub etc... You can find it in the baking isle at your grocery store. It's cheap enough and easy to find, I do not think you need to find substitute for it.

Great stuff, place the open box in the fridge to remove ant smells, some people brush with it makes the teeth brighter, pour the old box down the drain and let the water push it down the drain and it will make the pipes smell better.

Used in baking(duhhh). According to my cookbook, there is no substitute. Baking soda is also used to absorb odors in the fridge and other places where odors may be, repels insects, kitchen cleaner, and with water, helps stomach aches.
