It would take a plasma torch to melt a timing chain. The engine block would melt first.

If you melted a timing chain I would not worry about how the water pump did it. Take pictures, Cause you would be the first to do that.

when your water pump goes if you continue to drive your engine continues to heat up due to the lack of a water flow thro your engine, you can hrow a rod, blow the engine, or engine can lock up due to the over heating so yes it could mess up timing chain very easy..

The timing chain is the LEAST of your problems.
Buy a new engine.
