I played and played all day long, from morning to night.Mam and Dad never had much moneyand did not drive so a trip out was not possible so my mates and i would get fishing nets for tuppence and go to the river to catch tiddlers and catfish and tadpoles. Then we would pick bull rushes for the vase.We used our imagination to play fantasy games of witches and dragons. Then we would lift up the drains and play with the newts that lived there.I would wonder for miles without a care in the world, swinging from trees and bridges that we passed.Only hunger and a dimming of the day would send us scuttling back home with our wares of the day.My own children have no idea what fun i had and how lucky i was to be able to these simple things in safety.

We don't tend to make a big to-do about what we call "Labour Day" here in Canada...except as it is the last hurrah before all the kids return to school!

As a kid we always had to spend that last weekend in a frenzy of adventures just so that we wouldn't feel cheated of a minute of our summer holidays when we started back to school.

"Gordon Brown to create a clean economic business enterprise holiday in November to thank community heroes. Britain is very just about unique in Europe in having no economic business enterprise holiday journeys between the summer season and xmas" So it truly is a stable theory.

Dad would pack us all in the car for a visit to a seaside town, then tea at a hotel on the way home. Used to love them.
