I took the air filter off and it seem to be getting plenty of fuel. If I let it sit for a few hours it will start and run fine for about 20min. Could it be a vapor lock ? If so how do I go about checking for it and how do I correct it ? What else should I check ?

Hmm, vapor lock. I guess it could be a clogged gas cap. But I would think that if you took off the cap the engine should restart right away.

It is most likely an electrical component that is overheating and causing the tractor to stop. But rarely it can be the engine overheating. Check the top of the engine where it has the screen on the top that spins when the engine runs. Make sure it isn't clogged with grass.

When it dies, check for spark. If it doesn't have spark it would probably be the ignition module, but this being a two cylinder engine, it is doubtfull that both modules would be bad. If it has spark it is most likely a fuel issue. The vent on the fuel tank is a good suggestion. The tank has to be vented. Vapor lock is usally caused when the fuel line runs near something very hot, that is not the usual way the lines are routed on the mowers. It is possible that the engine cowling is plugged with grass. With the engine running make sure there is air blowing out of the bottom of the cowling on both sides. If not some compressed air in the screen on top of the engine will usually clean it out. If it has a low oil shut off, it could be faultly, agian, when it quits it wouldn't have spark.

sounds like the problem starts when the engine reaches normal running temperature. Verify the correct amount of oil is in the engine. Some units have a low oil shutoff to prevent damage to the engine, but I am not sure what kinda run time is required for this to activate. You may also want to check or replace the fuel filter, but it would seem odd that a clogged filter only causes problems after running for 20 minutes. Other stuff you can try might be the filters on the engine (oil and air) These can cause problems that may initially show up after a short duration engine run. Any of these things don't work out, probably gonna have to have it serviced. Good luck!!

I have had a problem like that before with a small push mower with a 5 hp engine, i found out it was the plug after i did all the other maintance on it. May be worth a try to replace it.... my 2 cents worth......

Change the air filter or clean it and check your oil level, if that is not the answer call your briggs & stratton company.

An engine will do this if a coil (armeture magneto) is breaking down. If your plug is good, check that next.
