The last few years have seen me increasingly aware of the vast damage that we (mankind) have inflicted upon our planet Earth in the course of our adopted lifestyle. For this reason, even though I have a list of reasons that make me more comfortable with the old fashioned paper book, I am growing to detest the fact that I have that list....because they are paper!!! I ask myself now; how many forrests have we turned into books? It must be a lot.
I find that my ability to do the "right thing" is strengthened when the "wrong thing" is not available...and so I would welcome the introduction of a situation where e-books were the only option! Computers have made this a viable option and I feel that we have reached a point where we should avail ourselves of it. In my mind there is no way to deny that when it comes down to it, as far as nature is concerned....books kill!
Perhaps making them from "grass" as was the practice in ancient days with "papyrus" would be acceptable, and it seems obvious that this is where the word "paper" comes from anyhow. In which case we are lying to ourselves when we call our tomes "paper backs"...they are actually "tree backs". Get rid of the practice of chopping down trees, pulping them and turning them to books...and I will read the alternative. Gladly!!!

I've never read a book online. The idea doesn't appeal to me at all.
Besides not being able to be comfortable, the question I have is: What would happen if the power went out? With a real book, I could light a candle and still read, while others are suddenly thrust into the terrifying vortex of not being able to be entertained by technology.
Hell, since I'm a writer, I actually have an old manual typewriter that works fine. If I'm ever on a writing tear and the power goes out, I could still continue to write.
I was a lousy Boy Scout for about six weeks, but I still live by their motto of "Be Prepared." :-)

I never really got into reading books online. I love to be in book stores and the smell of a book. ( dont get me wrong some smell nasty :P). I also love the feel of a book, as strange as that may sound. I like have online reviews about books and maybe a chapter to see how you may like the book, but nothing beats the actual thing. As with many things. Not only that the Internet can distract you easily while trying to read. Like i can never stick to reading one thing because then i will be like " i gotta check my e-mail " :P Besides you can take a book anywhere...a computer is a bit more complicated. But thanks for the link :)

No on line books for me. A book is something to cuddle up with, eat snacks with, lose your place and bookmark. Give me the old traditions. Have you ever tried to hold a door open with a book on line?
Plus, I can't stay that long in front of a screen. Too hard on my old eyes. If read books on line, how would I get any packages in the mail. Plus I just love browsing the books stores just for the right book and finding a surprise in my search. There is much more to just reading a book and I would miss that.

I've never read a book online, but I've read unpublished stories from fictionpress.com. It's a very official site where people post their works, stories of every genre, poems, essays, etc., and anyone can review it whether you're a member or not. There really is good stuff there, if you know how exactly to look, and a lot of it deserves to be published.

Of course having a real book is better... but if a person is traveling with their laptop... why not?
But the book format has to be a reasonable.
Here are some newer books on line too.

i dont seem to enjoy reading online the way i do when i have the actual book in my hands turning the pages. it feels like there is something missing when you read on the internet, even if it is the exact same book.

reading a book thats 500+ pages on my computer would fatigue my eyes pretty quickly and increase my electric bill. books are the way to go, but if you dont want to buy a book and you can get it for free off the internet, go for it

I didn't know that you could! I will bookmark that site. It's wonderful, because now I can read something even if I can't get to the library. (I don't buy books, because I don't re-read them, so I read ooks from the library.)
