The quickest and easiest way to get your combat level up is to work strength, then attack, then defense. Do strength first, and try to keep it about 10 levels higher than attack and def.
Mage and ranging will get your level up eventually, but they are both more expensive than melee, and won't raise your level as fast. I recommend fighting cows and chickens for new players. Take the feathers and cowhides to the bank and sell them to other players when you get a bunch. This will get you money to buy armor and weapons as your attack and defense get higher.

Every skill in Runescape ties into another and another and another. As you get into the quests, you will find you need certain levels in different skills before you can begin a quest (like lvl56 agility to do Regicide). There are some "pures", players who train mage or ranging without leveling strength, but, frankly, I don't know how they do it. Mage is very expensive to level....it takes a lot of runes. So you either have to be able to mine your own ess and make your own runes, or you have to be able to buy them. To level strength, attack, and defense just fight every NPC you encounter (well, check their level, first. When I was a level 3, I got killed by a chicken). Mining can make you a lot of money in the higher levels, as can high level crafting, fishing, and woodcutting. Herblore is easy to get started because as you battle a lot of NPC's they will drop a lot of herbs. There is a website called tip.it that will help you immensely. Just type tip.it into address bar...no www. before it. It explains EVERY skill in detail and how to go about leveling up in each skill. Good luck in the game!
