Charles Martel. Charles was "Mayor of the Palace" (something between a Chancellor and a Regent) for the last of the Merovignian kings (the descendants of Clovis). The son of Charles, Pippin, took the throne for himself. The grandson of Charles was Charlemagne who became Emperor of the Romans (in essence the first Holy Roman Emperor) in 800 AD.
