i want to make a go kart and have all the materials, including a welder. the problem is the motor, i have a lawnmower motor but was wondering if a chainsaw motor would be powerful enough or even work?

Chain saw motors are around the same size as Goped motors (23-26cc Zenoah motors). They will work, but won't have a lot of torque. Lawn mowers are a lot harder to implement. They usually use a vertial shaft (as opposed to a horizontal shaft). Ideally you would like a horizontal shaft motor with a larger displacement.. Chain saw motors make GREAT 1/4 scale RC car engines.

If you were to use a chain saw motor, be weary of the clutch. They are centrifugal and not meant to handle the load of a go kart.

First of all look close to the chainsaw sitting along side your bike.then look at the rotation of the chainsaw engine to the rotation of your bike bike sprocket. If i am thinking properly the chainsaw engine will have to be installed behind the rear sprocket or u will have the fastest bike ever going backwards! I say that because the sprocket on the chainsaw sits to deep to attach a chain to it and miss the engine if it is installed in front of the rear sprocket of the bike. And another thing is the chainsaw engine does have a centrifugal clutch so if u get it all together it will turn your sprocket.

you'd probably need two or three, which gets spendy quick. As far as you're situation, I'd say use the lawnmower engine.
I saw a video online of this guy who built an enormous motorcycle, powered by 20+ chainsaw engines. It was rediculous, but it worked...

it would, but slowly, as the chainsaw engines are in the 1-2hp range.

where are you going to ride it anyway??

As long as you didn't want to go more than 1mph. You need at least 5hp for a small go cart
