Thats a tough one. It could go either way. He could be just looking for an excuse to not get married. As in, well I would marry you honey but I want to have a house and car before I do it. Which, in my opinion, if he truly wants to marry you, it would not matter, because once you get married everything is half for both partners (at least in Arizona, it is).
On the other hand, it is bad for a relationship to not be equal. it creates havoc is the person who feels like they don't make enough money, or have enough things, or nice enough things. It seems like it would not be a big deal, but little by little, the small things start adding up and pretty soon you feel like your opinion does not matter. Its the money-maker who gets everything. So in a way, maybe this is some weird way of him controlling you, and your situation. Or maybe I am wrong, maybe he is just wanting you to not have to worry about anything.
Either way, why don't you sit down and ask him?
Hope this helps. And to agree with the person before me, Follow your heart.

What it means to me is that the man wants to marry the woman after he is able to buy a home and a car. Their isn't anything wrong in having a home and a nice car and then get married.

Well, some men tend to view marriage as a financial checklist. They don't want to go into it without getting their finances and career sorted out first. They think of marriage as needing to take care of someone for the rest of their lives so they take a very practical view of things....instead of looking at marriage in a romantic way. It's important to balance things out - the decision to marry shouldn't be taken lightly. There are certainly some practical considerations but it should mainly be about the love you feel for that person.

What is wrong with getting the house together?

Also, just curious how old is he that he still doesn't have his own car?

If I meet a man that still doesn't have his own car would tell me a lot about whether or not he is financially stable to have a home.

I think he wants to OWN more than just a house or car.

It is an honest answer, it means to me that he wants to get established before he says yes. It also means that he might not be ready to have those things yet and that he isn't ready for that type of commentment. I think he is serious but needs more time.

if his finances allow this in a short time, he may be legit. Ask him to detail the finances to you--as his (perhaps) bride to be, you have every right to know. If he yammers and stutters and refuses, watch out. Remember, he may be just leading you on...many guys subscribe to the theorey: Why buy the cow when the milk is free?"

I believe he is honest and really loves the girl. Love doesnt give you food and shelter. So the guy wanted to have everything ready to keep the girl comfortable and that is the point when he wanted to propose.
