Great Books, Incredible Movies!!!!
(Off the top of my head) Some of the ways he uses his powers are:
1. The fireworks for Bilbo's party (which he created)
2. The attack on Saruman when he finds out his bad intentions.
3. His call to the Eagles to save him from the top of Isengard.
4. He uses his staff as a light to get through the caves.

This is your homework, right?
Anyway, here are a few pointers.
* He can call on eagles.
* Do arcane magic, fights Saruman, releases the magic on Gondor king
* Uses his position, known to all
* Friends with tree people
* Bringer of light
* And obviously, his character adds charisma to the book/movie.
* Brings happiness and feeling of togetherness/power to people around him.

He is mainly a politician. He uses his status as a great magician, influence, and knowledge of current events to bolster his cause (destroying the dark lord). His magic itself, when used, comes from his staff.
