Owner of a '96 Camaro V-6 and thus far have had no problems accept a rattly exhaust. (simple fix)
The biggest benefit is Chevy uses timing chain, not a belt. (reliability)
They do however have problems with fuel pumps going out. The one in the tank. Just don't run the tank dry of gas and you should be fine.
ADDED:
Personally, after 1997 they started to change the front of the car to "euro" style lights and it lost some of it's American Muscle Car appeal.

If the mileage isn't bad, then the maintenance won't be too bad. I owned a 94 z28 and I had very few problems. But the problems I did have were more difficult to work on the the average car. Example, the LT1 camaro has what they call an "opti spark" distributer. When it fails, and it will, you need to be prepared to either spend a good weekend in the garage, or be prepared to pay someone else about 8 hours of labor. The only other problem I had was Plug wires. They went bad causing misfires. Took me about 4 hours to change them.
As for effiecency, with a 6speed transmission, I could pull 18mpg running back and forth to work, and 27mpg on the highway.
I am a car guy, and maintenance doesn't scare me, I thought it made a dependable every day driver. Stay away from one that has been modded up for racing.
Hope this helps.

As an owner of 2 Camaros (69 and 94) I have had virtually no problems with the 94. The only issue really was the rear end bearings. I had to change them at 44K. They are starting to whine again (I now have 240K on it). Other than a clutch(90K) and power window motors (3 times on the drivers side), and A/C (stopped working at 120K) I have not have any breakdowns with this car. It's been perfect even though I am out growning it (family) it still makes it a hard thing to get rid of since it has been so reliable.

I havent had any exp with the post '98 camaros, but ive had a 1989 and a 1992 and i havent any issues that couldnt be resolved in my driveway. Second thing is the post '98's are LS1's, or i should say, the V-8s are. But thoes 350's can take alot of miles. And the MPG is just like anyother high performance car, if you lead foot it everywhere your gonna need to fill up alot, but if you drive like a granny, you shouldnt have any problems. I hope this helps.

The handling is great in those cars. The brakes will need a little more attention then most cars and the hwy mpg is pretty good for the 6cyl models. I would recommend using synthetic oil and lucas treatment for the tranny. Other than that you should be ok
