Bush's point is that when we bailed on Vietnam 3 million S Vietnamese were executed by thr NVA and Khmer Rouge or drowned at sea (boat people) trying to flee the country. If we leave Iraq too soon before the Iraqi govt is strong enough to stabilize the chaos created by the warring sectarian and religious factions, the death toll will soar and Iraq will become a breeding ground for more terrorism funded by Iran. Not to mention we will lose all credibility with whatever allies we still have.
Note: the last I heard, Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, Hillary and Obama never served in the military. Are they cowards? Reid is old enough to have served in Vietnam and Obama in the Gulf War.

Obtuse..one of the best words I have heard to describe Bush..of course it is the "cowards"..mostly rich, who seem to have no problem sending other people's children to die...it was a sad affair the amount of young men who died in Vietnam..you know the average age of men in WW2 was 26 and in Vietnam it was 18...what a sad carnage of the future of America and what is left is the Cheneys, Rumsfelds and Bushs..in that order because Mr Obtuse is much too narrow and well, stupid, to be orchestrating such a debacle..wait maybe this is why it is a mess....the next step will be the draft and once again the young will be dying...and it won't be the Harvard/Yale crowd it will be the blacks, Hispanics and mid west American farm boys once again...perhaps the reason they want illegals registered so they will have more fodder for Vietnam..anyway, "obtuse" I love..last time I heard it was to describe Les Nesman on WKRP...and that in itself is Bush.

What's really humorous is how long he fought that analogy, but then finally, out of nowhere, decided to compare Vietnam to Iraq, in an attempt to highlight the "favorable" comparisons, which, of course, are all fantasies created over time. So to answer your question, he's being obtuse.

I think Bush is merely picking and choosing which "lessons" to learn from Vietnam. The problem with that is it makes for a very poor argument on his part. Also his entire characterization of Vietnam is more self serving than historically accurate.
He didn't serve because he didn't have to as a young, wealthy American elite.

Yeah. It's pretty sad that a "war president" never has fought in a war himself. He used the PART TIME National Guard to get out of Vietnam. And he didn't even fulfill his National Guard duty.
I wouldn't want to be in a foxhole with that wimp. All tough talk but no action.

Whether he is being ironic or just obtuse, the fact remains that unwittingly he has started another controversy.Let us wait and see how he handles the situation.Personally,I feel that
he should ignore all criticism on this issue and move on to matters of gravitas.

Stick to the point...The Libs have been trying to make Iraq Bush's Viet Nam almost from the beginning. He finally is confronting them on their hypocrisy, and suddenly the Libs are back pedaling so fast they are tripping over each other.
