Put a clear varnish on first (sometimes they are called nail harders) put your colour on top, once dry apply another layer, then once thats dry put the clear one on top. Every couple of days put a layer of clear.

When you paint your nails, wipe remover on first. If your nails have no oil on them, the polish will adhere better. Use an acrylic topcoat. Brucci makes a $2 one that's actually really good. Also, it's a pain but use a base coat if you're painting your nails black. Eventually they will turn gray-ish otherwise. Do it right once and you'll save time and money reapplying : )

I have always loved the look of polished nails but could never get it to last longer than a day.
Then one day I had gel put on my nails. The only way I have gotton my nail polish to last longer than a day is to have them painted over with acrylic or gel. This makes the surface non-pourous and your nail polish will actually last for WEEKS. I can never go back now. I remove my nail polish now when it GROWS out, not comes off.
A big helper is also to use an excellent top coat. Seche Vite is the best! It makes your nail polish dry within 5 minutes and you can even go to bed right after that and you won't get sheet marks!
If you don't have acrylic on top of your nails you could try their base coat which may help it adhere (I wouldn't know because I don't need it due to having acrylic)... but if they make their base coat as good as their top coat maybe it will!
My own nalon salon doesn't use Seche Vite so I bring it with me. Their cheap top coat won't dry the manicure quickly. They won't bear the expensive of Seche Vite which is $10 a bottle for all of their customers. But I won't risk messing up the manicure so I have them put mine on instead of theirs.

Apply a layer of clear varnish on top of your black every day to prolong the life of the paint job.

You need to use a 'base coat' to prepare your nails then 2 coats of colour, not too thick, and a clear top coat, allow each coat to dry before you do the next one. I follow this and my colour lasts a week.

2 or 3 thin coats will stay on better than 1 thick one. i like max factor nailfinity, its the longest lasting ive used but i dont know if they do black. try a good quality topcoat, it should help your polish last longer

You've got lots of great advice here but also make sure your nails are healthy. If they split and peel there goes your polish.

i use a base coat..let it dry - then two coats of polish, letting each one dry...THEN..a glossy clear top coat...takes a while, but lasts longer.
Rimmel have just bought out a long lasting nail polish which has 'lycra' in it.....and actually...that does stay on a lot longer than most.
