I should be able to handle a total of 512 megs of ram but it won't let me install both 256 ram sticks. I tested all of the sticks. My system will run with any of the 256 sticks by themselves so I know they both are good. The system will let me run one 256 stick with one 128 stick with no problems.
Here is the error message paraphrased so I don't write a novel: "a problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If this message appears again, the bios in this system is not fully ACPI compliant. Please get an updated bios."
If you need to know, my computer is an HP Pavilion xt953. I don't know much about bios so please be patient in your explanation. thanks

And yes, the two sticks are identical in brand and all other features.

More than likely you either have an out of date BIOS that had some known problems with it; for which the remedy is to locate the tech support section of HPs website and find updates for your machine.

I doubt that you need to worry about configuring your BIOS to match clock speeds, its probably all done automatically...

Or in the worst case scenario, your secondary expansion slot is bad.

It appears you will be unable to run your puter with 512MBs of ram unless you update the bios for your motherboard. If you don't know what that means or how to do it I suggest you be happy with 384MBs of ram because flashing your bios improperly can ruin your motherboard. Tru this--just click on "scan my system" and see what upgrades it shows that you can run

I ran into this problem upgrading a customers HP they bought from Wal-mart-even after flashing the bios it wouldn't run 2 sticks of memory designed for that board! Make sure one of the sticks isn't high-density ram.--they have all the chips on one side instead of both sides. If you have an Intel chipset Intel chipsets will not run high-density ram.

I sugest making certain that the 256 sticks you have are not, Whats known as Duel Banked. Older motherboards think you have 2 sticks in with Duel banked even when you have one. My board has 4 slots but can only take 2 duel banked sticks. along with some older computers cant even handle Duel banks.

Are the 2 sticks of ram MATCHED ? ie GUARANTEED to work together ? If not and 1 was bought at a ddifferent time, it's probably got a slightly different clock timing and so causes timing issues with existing ram

truthfully, your laptop is a dinosaur...possibly older. i decide to advise something extra "present day", whether this is attainable. It looks such as you have compatibility problems to me pondering the 512 ram. My FIRST laptop had 512 ram and that replaced into 10 in the past.
