Hi is there a difference in size from a medium standard racing helmet to a medium motocross helmet? Are motocross helmets with goggles comfortable? Which type of helmet do you prefer? Many Thanks Jimbo

Jimbo, if you want to ride on the street, a street helmet is advised. Motocross helmets don't have safety features like street helmets do, and they're less comfortable for the long haul.
Most full face street helmets have EPS in the chinbar, which is the same stuff in the rest of the helmet to protect your chin and mouth area.
If, however, I'm just riding in the dirt...a dirt helmet is fine.

The size of helmets is really only a guide of what you should try on. Of the same size, you'll find one make really comfortable and another make unbearable. Go to a big outlet with lots of different brands and sizes in stock and try on until you find one which you like and fits snug on your head which doesn't move without the strap done up. Ultimately, full face helmets are safer/offer better protection all round, but become unbearably hot riding MX or tight supermotos where you haven't got a lot of speed to generate air to cool you down. Goggles take some getting used to but both types of helmets are designed for a specific type of use. Motocross helmet for dirt, full face for the street. The half of three quarter helmets are dangerous things, unless you like to crash and scrape your chin on a hard surface.

Use a motocross helmet when riding offroad (MX track, sand pit, trails).
Use a full face helmet when riding on pavement (track, street).
When riding on both with an enduro/dual purpose bike - best to use a full face helmet, or 3/4 helmet with a face shield.
Full face in the dirt - you'll sweat and over heat.
MX on the street - less visibility, the visor acts like a sail and you'll be fighting the wind to keep your head in one position - the open face allows rain, bugs and debris into your helmet.
MX helmets are comfortable with goggles and the goggles are large enough to accommodate prescription glasses.
Helmet sizes vary from manufacture to manufacture.
It's best to try them on before purchasing.
If you want to buy through mail order - try them on at a shop and get the size and model #.
