Actually, there would probably have been some "boat people" and some genocide, but it would have been on a lesser scale. When the U.S. came in to aid South Vietnam, we replaced the French. If we had not done so, the Vietnamese allies of the French would have fled. I don't usually recommend movies as a source, but rent "The Quiet American" from 2002 to learn more about how we got into Vietnam. It's based on a fairly accurate book. I did two tours in Vietnam. I was #357 in the first draft lottery so I never would have been drafted, but I was young and believed in the Domino Theory espoused at the time. My first tour was a "grunt" but I had a skill the gov't found useful the 2nd time and I really learned what led us into Vietnam in the first place after the French failed (insert French military jokes here :)

We didn't "invade" Vietnam. We went in to fight a "rear-guard action" so the French could escape from their disintegrating former colony.
At that time, the whole region was called "French Indo-china". We were asked to stay on to support the wealthy Catholics, who had come to power in South Vietnam under French rule.
Meanwhile, an opposing political force, which had originally been a Nationalist Party, was coming to power in the Northern part of the country.
These were the folks who had run-out the French.
They had asked for arms and equipment from the Western nations, so they could defend their newly liberated country from the big scary Red Chinese on their border, but the US decided to support the Elite Capitalist who had seized power in the South, in the vacuum
This former political exile named Ho Chi Mihn, then had no choice but to declare his party as Communist, so they would be allied with the Chinese, have some guns and planes, and be able to resist rule from the French's lackeys,( now American Stooges), ruling in the South.
If we hadn't refused help to the Northern Vietnamese, they would have quickly defeated the South Vietnamese Army, re-united their nation, and there would never have been all the death and destruction that happened in there,as well as Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and elsewhere in the region.

When did the U.S. Invade Vietnam?
We went to Vietnam at the request of the government of the Republic of Vietnam (South), which existed before we got there.
Many of the Vietnamese refugees were ethnic Chinese who were driven out because of differences between Vietnam and China
Obviously another product of a broken educational system

We did not invade Vietnam, but after a war the losers are hung, and the winners elected. Nothing in recent history suggest that that will change anytime soon.

Is this some slick way of saying history is repeating itself in iraq, and that our leaders created a mess and now are telling us we cant leave or else there will be a bigger mess?

Of course not. But the US killed more people during the war than died aftewards.
And most of those who died afterwards were killed by the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia. They took over after the US bombed Cambodia and the pro-US puppet was forced from power.

No, this would all have occurred instead before the war, probably with many more casualties than with the US there helping out!

Your lack of history is stunning. The US did not invade Vietnam.
Please do some research before you ask such a misinformed question.
