i've been looking for the SOFT COVER version of Deathly Hallows in stores but can't find it. does anyone know how long after the hardcover comes out the softcover is released?

If you mean the Paperback, it usually takes about a year - because the hardback sells so well, and they don't want to cut into hardback sales.
Order of the Phoenix came out on June 21, 2003, and the paperback came out Aug. 10, 2004
Half Blood Prince came out July 16, 2005, and the paperback came out July 25, 2006
Those are the Scholastic Versions.

It normally takes about a year for it to come out. If you want to wait that long to buy it, but want to read it sooner you could try checking a local library to see if they have a copy that isn't checked out. However, seeing as it hasn't been that long since the book came out, you may have to put your name on a waiting list.

The hardcover book is already reduced in price. You can also borrow it from a place called a "library."
