Could be a lack of system resources. You can see if your computer can handle more RAM by going to Crucial.com and running a scan.
http://www.crucial.com/index.asp

It's important to note that everything takes RAM. Not only security products (such as active anti-spyware, anti-virus and firewall) eat up memory but your operating system, active browser windows, running applications (such as Word, Gaming, Messenger, Photoshop, etc) and malware all compete for system resources. The presence of Malware (viruses, spyware, etc) will particularly eat up your system resources so you may want to run your resident security products such as antispyware and antivirus applications to ensure that your system is clean.

You didn't say how old your machine is or what operating system you're using, or whether you're using broadband or a modem, how much RAM you're using, what programs you're running in the "background", etc, etc, etc, so it's next to impossible to diagnose the problem (and some of us don't know what you mean by "alienware"; you got it from a UFO???). ;)

However, I will say that defragging more than once or twice a year is completely unnecessary, especially with modern PC's, and, with older machines, defragging may actually cause more damage!

I normally would give a few links, but, without detailed info about your computer, and, given that you are probably new to computers and/or are probably not a technical person, it would be irresponsible of me to do so.

First which anti virus are you using to check for viruses
I am asking because I am a computer Tech
AVG is Free and it is the best in surveys it outdid Norton And Mcafee
Next From the computers we have come into the shop on a daily basis with this same problem you either have spyware on your pc or a virus
I suggest along with downloading AVG I also suggest Spyware Blaster and Spybot Search And Destroy
You Can Get Them At www.spywareblaster.com or www.spybot.com
AVG you can get at www.free.grisoft.avg.com
I would be quick about this because spyware or virus your running a risk of compromising your computer for a melt down if you don't get these fixed ASAP
Hope this helps
