You're not an idiot by the way, if you're in honors you're quite smart. Just hang in there, it's not easy being smart, it's alot of work, but it's good in the long run.

First, why did you give your avatar facial hair if you are only 11?

So what does 0.4 mean? Every number in the universe can be written as itself OVER 1. For example:
0.4 = 0.4/1

This is true, right? because 0.4 divided by 1 equals 0.4.

Well, now that we can right 0.4 as a fraction, let's start moving around the decimal (you can do this by moving the decimal the same way in the numerator as you do with the denominator... or you can multiply the bottom and the top by 10... you can do this because multiplying any number by 10/10 is the same as multiplying it by ONE):
0.4/1.0 * 10/10 = 4/10

10/10 = 1 and 1 times any number equals the original number! get it? For example:
216,272 * 1 = 216,272
216,272 * 10/10 = 216,272

Anyway, back to our problem... now that you have the first of your three fractions (4/10), you can continue the same process and multiply the top and the bottom by the same number... or you can simplify by dividing the top and bottom by the same number...
Multiply : 4/10 * 3/3 = 12/30
Divide: 4/10 divided by 2/2 = 2/5

So now you have three fractions:
4/10, 12/30, 2/5

You can do this an infinite number of times:
Multiply: 4/10 * 5/5 = 20/50
Multiply: 4/10 * 6/6 = 24/60
Divide: 200/500 divided by 5/5 = 40/100
etc, etc....

Get it?

.40 can be read as 40 hundredths (just know your place values). 40 hundredths can be written as 40/100. If you take the 0 off .40 (as you can add or subtract as many 0's as you want after a decimal point) you have .4, which can be read as 4 tenths. This can be written as 4/10. Then, if you know how to reduce fractions, 4/10=2/5 (just divide the top and bottom by 2).

I hope that helped!! Good luck with your honors classes!

0 . 40
= 40 / 100 = 4 / 10 = 2 / 5 = 16 / 40 = 32 / 80 etc
Don`t worry about these , all you have to do is multiply or divide the top and bottom line by the same number-----you can do it!

0.4 is 2/5 in fractions. Anything equal to 2/5 will do.

Here is a list:

2/5
4/10
6/15
8/20
10/25
12/30

Notice I add 2 to the top number and 5 to the bottom. As long as you do that consistently you will always end up wit ha fraction that reduces to 2/5.

0.4 = 0.4/1 = (0.4/1)x(10/10) = 4/10, your first fraction

4/10 = (2x2)/(2x5) = (2/2)x(2/5) = 1x(2/5) = 2/5, your second fraction

choose any whole number (except 2), say 5.

(2/5)x(5/5) = (2x5)/(5x5) = 10/25, your third fraction.
