I got married about a month after my 20th birthday. On the eve of my wedding I still lived with my parents. On the next day, I lived with my husband. I got divorced just shy of 23. (Some folks, but not many, are mature enough to marry at 20. I wasn't one of them.)
I think many people experience living on their own for the first time when they head off to college. So I'm betting the average answer will be 18 or 19 years old.
