I'm 8 weeks pregnant, not showing at all and very sedentary these days because of bad morning sickness. Yet I feel short of breath throughout the day and right now my resting heart rate is 100 (beats per minute). I have not done anything to exert myself. Is this normal??

Well, when you are pregnant your cardiac output increases about 40 to 50 percent ( b/c the fetus needs additional oxygen), which in turn, increases your resting heart rate anywhere from 10 to 20 beats per minute. So it all depends on what your "normal" resting heart rate is.

A typical resting heart rate for the average non-pregnant woman would be 70 bpm but the same woman has a resting heart rate of 85 bpm just by being pregnant.

It's possible your normal heart rate is about 80-85 at rest and so now that you're pregnant it's more like 95-100 and so that would be normal for you.

Plus, if you are not getting much exercise right now and mostly just puttering around the house and lying/sitting when you are feeling sick, then rest assured that ANY little exertion (like going outside to feed your dogs) is going to tax you more since your endurance is really low right now, as well as your energy levels.

I would mention this at your next doctor's visit just in case, but it doesn't sound abnormal. Your body is working hard to make and nourish a new life!

It can be 'normal' because of the extra work your heart is doing..but this is dealing with your health and the health of your unborn baby....please call/consult your doctor with this question or any during pregnancy. It's great to get helpful hints/advice from Yahoo Answers, but really ask your doctor. Most of the people on here are NOT medical professionals, and those of us that do have that background, can't really give you medical advice, of course, due to legal issues.
