I've heard stories of people who won't let their kids play with kids from parents that are politically different . Specifically Dems and Reps . I understand where it's coming from , but if you've done this I wonder if you've taken everything into consideration .

Those kids, yours and theirs are just kids . Sure some of their parents have less stringent rules and others have more stringent rules, but they are children . We were always allowed to play with any kids on the block . Baseball , football , roller skating , backyards made into mini ice rinks in the winter . Playing kick-the-can , ringing doorbells and then running . Climbing trees , 'saving' fallen young birds(they usually died anyway but we tried) . Red rover red rover , roasting marshmallows , sleeping in tents in the backyard . We could tell that other parents were more or less permissive . And we learned from it too !!

What if it was YOU who was ostracized from the rest of the kids ? How would that make you feel ?

I remember those good old days, but we're living in much different times now where parents have to be so careful about who they let their kids play with.I'd feel bad about being ostracized-then and now.

I have never seen this happen. Do you have an actual case to cite?

EDIT: Okay, point taken. But...I don't consider the trolls on YA the real world. I'm not young, I've been around a little while, I've raised several children and I have never faced a situation where kids were not allowed to play with others because of political issues. I guess I live in a good place.

Political affiliation of the parents should be the last thing on your mind when you are deciding who you will let your child be friends with. Your job as a parent is to love your children, protect them, educate them, and keep them safe. Using your child as a partisan weapon just shows a parents ignorance. Why would someone be so afraid of their child being exposed to an opposing viewpoint? It just doesn't make sense.

In my day politics wasn't discussed in a social situation.
Try that now.
Even your assumptions that political party is the result of one set of parents being more or less permissive is indicative of the great divide that's been perpetrated on this country.
You can't get more permissive than Rudy Giuliani, check out some info on his kids, even when they were young. No one ever caught Chelsea drinking when underage, like the Bush twins were, and everyone who knows Chelsea says shes a great, well balance woman. Political party doesn't have anything to do with permissiveness, or reasonableness as a parent.

I don't think thats right.
now if another child or their parents was trying to 'convert' my kid or they were slandering me, I'd have a word with the family. my children are going to live in a diverse nation- different genders, races, beliefs, lifestyles, family set-ups,ect.
they will experience a bit of everything and be a better person for it. but I will teach them what I believe to be right at the end of the day and am confident they will listen

-alphabetsoup2:
I'm not criticizing you, but did you know your child would be safer at a home with a gun than one with a pool?
I always thought that was funny.

I never could get how people take their politics that seriously. I am a Conservative living in a sea of Liberalism with my wife, a die hard Liberal, and all of her family who are old hippies. But we all manage very well together and even, gasp, like to be around each other. Go figure.

I guess some people just have nothing better to do.

I would never restrict association simply because of political views. However, if I knew the neighbors were loose with their children and allowed them to watch HBO, MTV and the likes I probably won't allow my children to play with them.
Children love to share the things they have been exposed to with their friends.

Kind of sucks doesn't it?

I am well aware that people have no problems ostracizing people because of the parents beliefs.

My mom had a partner for 30+years. Parents thought their kids would turn gay if they were around me. And no, I'm not gay.

In my book, it's racism, plain and simple. My neighbor doesn't let her kid outside because she doesn't want her to play with the black kids.

It's sad.

I never let my children play in a home where the ownership of arms can be ascertained. It is not a political statement, just concern for their safety. Generally, I will need to talk with any parent where my children might play, but, it is about their oversight and judgement, not, about any party affiliation they might have.

How can anyone understand where this is coming from?? To allow your children not to play with other kids because of their parents' political persuasion is repugnant at any level. All this does is fester more hatred, bias, and bigotry in an already-hate-filled, bias and bigoted world. Why not teach your kids that diversity, differences of opinion, freedom of expression, and freedom of choice is the American way? Are we turning our kids into robots who will not be allowed to think for themselves?? -RKO- 08/26/07
