You don't have an owner's manual? Your engine is completely drained of oil? Did you replace the oil filter?
If you drained all the oil/ and replaced the plug and put on a new oil filter. Start with 3 quarts. Then pull out the dipstick, wipe it off, wait about 3 minutes and put the dipstick back into the dipstick hole all the way down, wait 3 sec and with draw the dipstick. See any oil going accross the dipstick near the bottom of it? Clean oil does not show so easily so you have to use the daylight and twist the dipstick in the light to see.
I don't expect it would be showing that much it at all on 3, so add another quart and wait again 3 minutes and take out dipstick, wipe it off and reinsert it and recheck it.
Why it is being done twice is because some of the manufacturers of engines have the oil dripping on the dipstick as you are filling it and you cannot get a true reading of what is in the "pan".
Chances are that the oil will be showing. You have 2 lines on the dipstick. A high mark(which is closer to your finger) and a low mark - closer to the bottom end of the stick.
You want the oil level to be in a engine that is not running and is sitting on a flat pretty well level floor, to be near but under the high mark. When oil level only reaches the low mark.....the difference between the 2 marks is about a quart or litre.
Over filling is not good. Underfilling is not good either.
This applies for all vehicles except that some will take more oil than others. Big truck engines take a couple of gallons, and motorcycles take a quart or two.

Better look into it. Call up a dealership. I've done oil changes on some nissan's that only took like 3.5 quarts. So be careful.
