12/0 = undefined

Here is why:

When we say A/B = C, we mean that A = B*C. So in our case, when we say 12/0 = C, we mean that 12 = 0*C. However, no value of C will ever satisfy this equation, as 0*C = 0. Therefore, there is no solution for C and thus, 12/0 has no solution, ie "undefined".

However, when we graph the equation Y=1/X, we see that as X approaches 0 from the right, 1/X tends to infinity. And as X approaches 0 from the left, 1/x tends to negative infinity. This is what we call a limit in calculus.

On the other end of the spectrum, we can ask, what is 0/0?

With the same logic, when we say 0/0 = C, we mean that 0 = 0*C. And we see that for all values of C, 0 = 0*C. Therefore, C=0/0 can equal ANY NUMBER, and that is why we call it "indeterminate"

Understanding defined

6 / 3 = 2

Divisiion is the inverse of multiplication

Multiplying 2 times 3 in the denominator will give the product of 6 in the numerator. Therefore 6 / 3 = 2 can be defined

12 divided by 0

12 / 0 = is undefined

There is no real number multiplied times zero in the denominator to give the product of 12 in the numerator. Therefore 12 / 0 is undefined.

you can't divide by zero. An old maths teacher once explained why this is so. To divide 12 by 2 here is an example : Distribute 12 sweets among a group of people, giving each person 2 sweets until the sweets are all gone. How many people each got 2 sweets? The answer is six.
Now lets use this example to divide 12 by zero. Distribute 12 sweets among a group of people, giving each person no sweets until all of the sweets have been distributed. See the problem? It simply does not work! (",)

Wow, it appears that we have a lot of people who have forgotten basic math principles. Anything divided by 0 is undefined (you can divide and amount into 0 groups, it just isn't possible).
As to the other answers, 12/1= 12
0 divided by anything is 0, not the other way around.

Realize that when you divide by a DECIMAL the answer gets LARGER. (Ask several friends ¨"Quickly tell me what is 12 divided by 1/2 ?" Most will say 6 instead of 24.) Do you know 0.05 is the fraction 1/20 (0.05 = 5/100= 1/20) 12 divided by 1/20 is the same as 12 times 20=..............240 ANSWER..........240 PS Could always use a calculator---but you and I are to smart for such things HAVE A GREAT MATH DAY

It's undefined, and here is the simple reasoning for why:

x=12/0
0*x=12

There is no number that when multiplied by zero will give you 12. This is why you cannot divide by zero.

dividing by zero is we call indeterminate. Simply because, you don't know how the division will split. one can say that it doesn't split because it's zero, but since there's no proof of it (despite what you may see, there's a headache-inducing math subject on this, don't worry) we simply call it indeterminate

note: it's also not infinity because that means it never stops splitting. And would be wrong.
