If you already have broadband, and a wireless router, just set up laptop to connect to the router on the wirless link, and away for go.

Note, read manual for router (on it's CD usually) on guidance for enabling and configuring WEP/WPA security and USE IT !
then set laptop settigns to match amnd surf surf surf.

HINT : It's always easier to configure a router via a cat5 cable from PC to router,

A wireless router is a device that lets you connect your wi-fi enabled devices to connect to each other as well as to the internet.

The Internet LAN cable (with RJ45 Jack) goes into the wireless router.

If you have a desktop PC, a cable from your router would go to the PC's LAN card. It will let you configure your router.
OR
you can connect your laptop through its LAN card to the router. Although it's possible to configure your router wirelessly, it is not recommended as you would lose connection between your laptop and router when you'd reboot the router. So it's always better to use the cable for configuring your router.

Then you need to show your router how it gets connected to the internet. If you have ADSL modem, then you just need to enter the values of your Internet Gateway and DNS servers in the router. But if you have a WAN connection that requires a password, then you need to enter your user name as well as the password in the router.

Then you just need to configure the kind of security you want in your router and choose a pass code.

If you have only one laptop that you want to use with your router, then you can also enter your laptop's network card's hardware address so that no other device can connect to your router.

yes, you still need to sign up with an internet provider. The router just helps you connect to the internet without having to be plugged into a cable or phone line & stuck in one place (with the wireless you can use the laptop anywhere in your home)

You can buy a wireless card from Verizon or another cell service. It's more expensive but you won't need a router or a connection point in your house.

yes, you pay to your ISP (internet service providers) and you must buy a router and modem.
