like if i downlaod something which contains a virus, will it tell me that this file contains a virus or will i have to scan it manually?

avast scans the file you are downloading. If avast detects the file you are downloading as a virus or adware, it will alert you and it will give you an option to "Abort Connection" to prevent downloading the harmful file. Sometimes the file still gets in your computer but avast detects it again and gives you options like "Delete" or "Move to Chest" which is the same thing as locking up the virus so it doesn't harm your computer.

when u install it first, u have to do a manual scan, it can't tell u with out a scan whether there is a virus or not, after the scan, yes, then it will inform u when ever there is any virus attack

Scans when downloaded, sets of warning if it's infected. ZIPS etc need manually scanned as well once decompressed
