Did you buy the cigarettes they referenced? If so you may just owe the tax. There must be more to this story.

States have been going after people purchasing cigarettes on Indian reservations thereby avoid state tobacco taxes. This is considered a form of Tax Evasion.

If you purchased cigarettes without paying your state tobacco taxes then, yes, you have to pay it. Otherwise you probably risk wage garnishments or a tax lien filed against your property.

If you didn't purchase the cigarettes in question, you should appeal.

Whatever you do, do not ignore the letter.

Could be a hoax. Never heard of a Dept by that name. Contact ATF (Alcohol,Tobacco& Firearms) Dept.

Carl when you go to the office -- crawl in begging --- then throw yourself on the mercy of the investigators desk. Cooperate cigerette tax may be serious. One thing you don't want is guys that has ATF on the back of their jackets over at your house..

you better pay it. you get punished more for unpaid taxes
than if you murdered someone.
