Lakes and rivers are a blast to swim in. The openness is especially nice. Lakes are normally calm water that may get choppy if the wind blows. Rivers are, of course, flowing so, you may move down stream from where you entered and have to walk back. If you get caught in a fast flowing current, don't fight it, simply ride in it and slowly angle toward the shore.
I've done many open water swims including swimming from Alcatraz to San Francisco ... swimming in REAL water, not a pool is just plain fun.

I love swimming in lakes. Some lakes are brown, some green, some blue. It all depends. They are all just fine. Lakes are shallow and then gradually get deeper, usually. It dependds where you start in it. The middle of the lake can be extremely deep.
Rivers are a slight bit more dangerous. They have a current. But, some only have slight currents. Just swim with a buddy. And, you will be fine. Both are tons of fun to swim in.

Lakes are not at all dangerous to swim in by any means. Some get deep fast, while others can remain only four to five feet for a quarter of a mile. Rivers are probably a little more dangerous, but only if you are a bad simmer or can't touch. And no, the current isn't at all strong enough to prevent you from enjoying your swim, unless you are trying to swim in white rapids!

(NOTE: I AM NOT AN EXPERT. JMHO. WHEN YOU READ IT IS JUST MY OPINION. AND I WOULD ENCOURAGE YOU TO GO BEYOND Y ANSWERS AND DO MORE RESEARCH FROM EXPERTS)
I would never swim in a large river. if you got out to far there is a dangerous current that pulls you along down the river and down under water. small lakes are pretty much the safest in nature swimming. Ocean swimming can be very dangerous. You never know when there is going to be a strong undercurrent which takes you out to sea. But most public beaches on the Ocean have been studied and are pretty safe from sudden current or tidal changes. I personally don't like the salty ocean water. I prefer swimming pools and small lakes like the finger lakes in west central New York State. I've swam in ponds but they are pretty mucky, but some people love swimming in ponds. ponds aren't dangerous. to each his own

I don't like swimming in pools, but I love swimming in lakes and rivers. It is pretty much safe to swim in natural bodies of water, just make sure you take proper precautions. Lakes typically get deep very slowly and in some cases you can walk almost a half mile into the lake before it is even over your head. River usually get deeper much quicker than lakes and you must be very careful of the current or undertoe.

a lake will not have a current and almost always gets gradually deeper, although someimes it can drop off.
a river will have a current and depending on where you are will either be fast or slow....but almost always is there. they are the same for getting deeper....almost always gradual, but some cases might have a drop off.
as long as you are a fairly confident swimmmer you should be ok. make sure to watch out for rocks though when your swimming.
hope this helped and have fun!
