I belong to a group on Yahoo that makes craft projects for charities and we can always use yarn donations to help us out. We are not for profit. Any ideas for donations here?

You can join the free-cycle in your area and always ask for it there. Some times you can go to red Shield or other flea market type stores and as long as you have proof of charity, they may give you yarn, anything is worth a try when it's for charity. Especially if it is going to the troops overseas.

I found one of the best donations are coming from friends who at some point knitted or crochet. Another is an ad in the news paper of your home town. Just let everyone know that the donations will got to a good cause. You can also share the donations with local churches or even swap with them. Many have a knitting club. And once garage sales start up again you can find a wonderful array of yarns. If you see handmade items on the tables, there is somebody to ask if they have some leftovers! I have heard that Red Heart yarns will donate yarn if it is being used for charity.

Try contacting the yarn manufacturers. Surely they would be willing to donate for the publicity and the tax write off!

I belong to several clubs that do charity projects. What we have done is, a member who has a day job will get permission from their boss to do a campaign at work. Co-workers bring in materials and then we take a picture and write a little press release so the boss can get free publicity.

Check with your local yarn shop. Sometimes they collect partial balls and project leftovers from their clients to donate to charity groups.

I assume you're in the States - in the UK many charity shops have yarn as people clear out their Aunty's attic and find tons of it.

try garage sales thrift stores a lot of them will donate if for a good cause look on craigslist.com in your areas for free stuff after garage sales or such
