If I have another phone available (cell, home), I will call myself so that another call comes in. I then say "Hey, I really need to talk to this person, can I let you go for now?"
If I don't, I just say "I really need to get going. I have a few errands I have to run." or something like that.

I look at the caller ID and if it's someone who I know it chatty I pick up the phone and tell them that they just caught me going out the door and I really have to go. Or you can tell them you really have to use the bathroom and that you'll call them back, but don't. When they ask why you didn't return the tell them something else came up and it just slipped your mind. Or when I just don't want to lie, which is 99% of the time, just don't answer the phone.

My wife's aunt has the 'gift of gab'. Fortunately for her, once I pry a word or two in edgewise, she loses interest and says she has to go.
With telemarketers, I just tell them I either work for the company they are calling for or their competitor. They always appologize and rarely call back.
