Why do people who call on the telephone or knock on doors EXPECT people inside to always answer in the first place? Of course I have not answered the door ... I also rarely answer my phone. It's not usually Jehovah's Witnesses or Sales people though ... I've even not answered neighbors coming to 'borrow something' (or steal it) or just wanting to drop in to 'visit' ... when I wasn't feeling well, or was busy doing something I wanted to get done, or was trying to relax. My husband and I both feel that when we are at home, we shouldn't have to 'speak to' anyone unless we 'invite them' to visit or call us ... our home is our castle, and we feel that we both have the right not to answer. Of course since we live in a third floor walk up apartment with a 'locked' downstairs door and no 'bells' to announce people who are waiting for an answer, we don't have to even know they are out there ... and THAT is a 'really good thing' about where we live now.
Both of us are 'friendly' people, both of us have friends and good neighbors ... but when we are 'at home' we actually like 'being alone with each other' and don't always wear 'outside clothes' (or any clothes) ... and if I don't want 'you' in my home, either, all I have to do is turn off the Internet ... which is the way I think life should be.

Yes at Halloween as I was just too exhausted by the number of trick & treaters who had visited earlier in the evening.

My reward for not answering was to have my lovely oak front door vandalised by these yobs. The police thought they had used a screw driver to gouge out the woods making it unrepairable they also kicked off the letter box and broke the lovely stain glass panels.

These teenagers were the same youngster that I had invited into my home since they were at Primary School and have given them treats and money over the years....No more though NEVER AGAIN!.

It's called intimidated and the police well they never did a thing!

It is not compulsory to answer and subsequently open the door, unless the caller is a policeman with a warrant.

Only politeness compells us to answer such calls - these can be avoided by the use of a door-step camera, then we can make truly informed judgments about the caller, and respond accordingly.

I frequently refrain from answering the door, especially if it's my mother-in-law!

Countless times.

I especially like it when people call during your favorite show on TV. Super guys, thank you, now I've missed who the killer was.

But on the other hand I occasionally answer the door via the intercom when I know it is the Witnesses or the Mormons and then yell at them in a foreign language. Reeeeaaaally mean, but great fun.

Well!,no I'll answer the door for the Cult of Jehovah witness to take their watch tower and let them be on there way,but door to door sales man is a thing of the pass and is illegal in the state I live in.

Ooh I am so not the best person to try and get a hold of. I won't answer the phone if I don't know the number (if it's important, that person will leave a message). I won't answer the door if I don't know the person (unless it's a cop standing outside...then I might :) And I won't accept friends on myspace if I don't know them in real life.

But yeah, I am not afraid to not answer the door.

All the time. I have salesmen coming to the door more than religious people, but the salesman can be pushy and try to actually get into my house to demonstrate their products. To me it is just not safe to open the door to strangers, because for all you know it could be a predator.

Hell Yah! I don't like being bothered sometime. I check my caller ID on the phone to. If I don't feel like talking or if it a salesperson. They don't know whether I there or not if I don't answer the phone or the door.
