We follow your situation in Canada too!! You should get some help from other European nations soon, and hopefully this disaster will come to an end before it caused anymore troubles!
Our medias here don`t talk about who responsible for starting the fires, but I do feel something fishy there as those fires were started purposedly with a plan!! And from what I see, they knew about the forthcoming weather too!!
E-mail me, if I can do something for you and friends from Canada... Of course I can`t send CL-215 hydroplanes to do the job...

Villages and historic sites can be surrounded by low growing brush, which is basically how the fire spreads through a forest. The Greeks are suffering a bad case of Pax Americana. Modern forest fires are the result of an overgrowth of understory vegetation. This overgrowth occurs because it is not removed naturally by small fires - and this all might be caused by an American bear. "Smokey the Bear" was a spokes(man?) for the US forest service, which during the latter half of the 20th century tried to eradicate all fires, whether naturally burning or not. "Only YOU can prevent forest fires", was Smokey's stern advice. What Smokey didn't know was that American forests were filling with dead timber and a host of other detritus which was primed and ready to burn. The great fire of 1988 burned much of Yellowstone forest, and of course threatened the main lodge. Native Americans understood nature better than cartoon bears. They selectivly burned the forest until it resembled an open park with grass growing between enormous trees. This improved hunting, and it was also good for the deer, since they had food to graze on. This is impossible today because westerners have always prized big trees as lumber instead of as hunting blinds. The cedars of lebanon are a prime example. Also, all the open space is best filled with a monoculture of fast growing lumber. Hopefully Americans can find a way to industrialize nature without it all burning to the ground first.

Yes being a native myself it brings me to tears every time I watch the Greek news lately... Unfortunately compile with careless farmers and herders attempting to clear fields and the usual carelessness of smokers and campers it is suspected that political agendas of oppossing political parties are attempting to create chaos this election years... over 145 different fires so far and 63 casualties... The Pirmeminister has issued a stated of emergency and has give the military the duty of overseeing and conducting the efforts of getting these fires under control... hopefully this will put an end to this terrible and unfortunate incident
My prayers are with my country and it's people and hope all will be well... please pray for them too

No Ancient Olympia is still not on fire! The ancient monuments are heavily protected by every force in the area! Also the ancient site has an automatic outdoor sprinkling system which is in full operation!
The fire is 40 mile long and travels in great speed!
The surrounding area is in real trouble and every effort is taken to stop the disaster!
The monuments are not in danger from the fire but the sacred forest is in danger including the museum of Olympia!
(fisika i anikanotita tis kivernisis einai profanis!!!! Apo to proi itan gnosto oti to metopo kateuthinotan stin Olimpia!!!! As elpisoume na min exoume xeirotera!! Oxi tipota allo alla ginomaste rezili stous ksenous!!!!)
UPDATE: Ancient Olympia was saved! The sacred forests were seriously damaged!

I'm listening to the news and reading the reports from the area, and I am shocked, really. It's never been of such a degree, right? Of course we're sympathizing with you, I wish we could help in a more technical way that would help tame the fires. But even now, I'm sending you our support from Serbia, hoping this disaster is stopped soon.

Tolia, what can we say, we have been following this disaster since Friday on ERT satellite TV, and as I said before our heart is bleeding. September 2006 we have visited Ancient Olympia and the whole area including Zacharo.. I see it all before me as if it was yesterday.. what is happening now is absolutely unbelievable and should not happen.. one feels so helpless. We have spent over 8 weeks traveling throughout Peloponnese last 14months.. have learned to love it and its people.. and we have booked months ago to go back to the South-West area, leaving on September 15th.. we will come whatever happens.
We wish all who are suffering and lost dear once all the strenght in the world; we pray for you all.

I'm Greek too. this is absolutely ridiculous. who would have this much hate for Greece? theres no way these fires were caused by the heat. they were caused thanks to stupid pyros. i pray that Greece gets this fire under control soon. I've got family there. this is very scary. my aunt says as she drives, she can see the flames in Athens. may the people who started these fires die of a long, cruel, painful death.

I can't believe this is going on either...at the beginning (back in July) it was thought that the scorching heat was to blame, but obviously it has taken a sinister turn for the worse since then...in the name of humanity, someone put an end to this!

THIS IS REALLY SAD. I HOPE IT HASENT BEEN DONE UN PURPOSE. WHAT KIND OF A PERSON CAN DO THIS? SOMETIMES WE HAVE FOREST FIRES IN TURKEY TOO. ITS SOMETIMES COZ OF THE HEAT. BUT BEFORE VILLAGERS WERE DOING IT TO OPEN AN EMPTY FIELD FOR FARMING. AND SOMETIMES KIDS... HOW MANY PEOPLE AND ANIMAL DIED? THIS IS A TRAGEDY. IF ITS DONE UN PURPOSE YOUR GOVERNMENT SHOULD FIND THE CRIMINALS AND HANG THEM BY THE NECK! THIS IS A CRIME AGAINST THE NATURE ITSELF...
