I have a friend that needs a radiator hose replaced, and in buying a new one we discovered he does not have the regular engine in it that comes with the car. Is there some way to identify this engine? (We are going to bring in the hose and say we need THIS replaced but that still does not tell us what engine it is)

Unless it says 3.5 liter or what not, you'll need some i.d. off the engine.

Easiest thing is take the hose in and have them match it up.

Most cars can only have a few different engines that will fit. I.E. you can put a DOHC Acura engine in a Civic relativlely simple.

Regardless whatever car it is w/o majors mod can only have a few engine in it. though you can replace just about any small block chevy with a different small block chevy.

Though the hose probably will probably still go by car application not engine as long as it's 4 cyl, replaced 4 cyl..

i assume it incredibly is an air cooled and not water cooled. The older buses many times had 1600 cc engines. If it has twin carbs, those have been extra. this is in all probability a twin port motor that's easy to tell. the place the intake manifold is going into the cylinder head there'll be the two what looks like 2 tubes made into one attaching to the pinnacle. this is a twin port. whether this is a single around tube bolting to the astonishing of the pinnacle, this is a single port. The autos are comparable to a type a million (trojan horse) the better displacement of 1835 is finished with gadget artwork and extra advantageous cylinders. inventory although this is in all probability a 1600cc twin port with weber 40's or weber 40 4's carburators. so a techniques as a diagram. Do you advise the heart of the motor, or do you advise the electrical powered schematics or what? except you have completed engine rebuilding or have get entry to to the suited approaches, think of two times, than think of one extra time formerly digging in. in case you e mail me with extra info i may be happy to lend you an ear. I even have been a mechanic for some years and VW's have been my considerable hobby decrease back in los Angelas formerly I have been given my first V8 muscle automobile.

Yes you can identify an engine by looking at it. The key word here is "looking" at it. There are many ways to tell what kind of motor you have. Too many to list here. If we could see the motor and what type of car it's in. Then someone could tell you what it is. Knowing what kind of car it's in would help even though it's not the original engine. Only certain motors will fit in certain cars without major modification to the engine compartment.

The "emissions" decal near the radiator or under the hood should say.
