the great King Leonidas of Lacedaemeon,
he compared to all heros of this world should be held
at the loftiest point.
not only did he fight and die for that which he loved,
Sparta, and all of Greece, but he stopped a monster.
if Leonidas would not have been brave enough to
stand against Persia, neither would have any other greek
thus Persia would have burned Athens (which they did anyway..)
and Sparta, the strongest of the City States in anchient Greece.
if they would have been destroyed, we would not have
any western culture to begin with.
what greek would fight, knowing even the Lacedaemeons failed? none, no culture would have ever given up a fight again, knowing that the strongest of them all fell.
no Greek would have went to colonize Rome, nor Spain,
Nor France,
that means no Paris, no London, no Madrid, no Rome,
everything that we have today, would be gone to a Persian rule, for there would be no Alexander the Great to conquer them, and no other would accomplish that feat, once the Greeks, the fathers of western culture, were under their sway, Jesus of Nazareth? would not be a name to almost all.
Ghandi? malcolm x? the united states presidents? the British, nothing, would have ever come to be, if not for those brave me at Thermopylae.
everything you know today, is because 7000 brave Greeks,
under the Leadership of King Leonidas,
died at Thermopylae.

All the other answers suck. These people may have been great, but they were not heroes. They all had selfish reasons for doing what they did.
What about the Russian helicopter pilots who flew time and time again over the Chernobyl nuclear reactor and the ground crews working below, knowing they were going to die?
What about the USA firemen who went into the World Trade Center when everyone else was running away?
For that matter, what about the British Grenadiers who have sacrificed themselves for their country thoughout their history?

How do we define a hero? Is it by the lands he has conquered, or by the good he has done the world? I would pick General Grant, as he brought the rebellion against the United States to its knees, and was also a good man.

a responsible loving parent.
Reason: Look at how many parents today either dump their children off with daycares, friends, family and spend so little time with them, or the parent(s) that is never there. Most parents associate with their children by giving them material items and telling them to go do something as long as the child is not in their way.
Very rarely is the parent an active part of a child's life.

ALEXANDER THE GREAT.
He was the greatest commander of all times. For him the Greek culture spread into different parts of Europe and Asia
and vise versa. He never stooped to conquer.
