I don't understand why people a penalized for buying "the American dream"
Homeowner work for up to 30 years to pay off a house of their own. After the mortgage is gone, the property tax remains till they die. And some taxes are pretty high.
I live in a apartment complex that is subsidized. The got a tax abatement from the city, because they big time landlords (a corporation) brought clean affordable housing to our small town.
Most homeowners take pride in their home and maintain it over the years and keep the property value up.
So I don't get why big companies get abatements and homeowners have to pay?

Most taxes are unfair. They are, however, a fact of life in most civilized sociaties. The landlords you refer to do pay some taxes, but they have asked for and received some special treatment. Their tax abatement actually amounts to cheaper rent for you. Don't complain too loudly.

Big companies pay property taxes too. Many towns will give big companies abatements for a period of time to entice them to move into the town. Then their taxes begin and they pay plenty. Property taxes basically fund the cost of running the schools in the town. They also pay for municipal services and the general cost of running the local government. They are not a penalty for owning the house but a way to pay the local costs involved in maintaining the community. And, although I personally agree they can be painful at time, they are a necessary evil that Americans must pay to live in a free society.

Don't think of it for be penalized for buying "The American Dream", think of it as part of the cost.

Because your landlord was able to get a tax abatement from the city, you pay less in rent. All of your landlord's costs go into determining what they lard charge you in rent.

If you want to pay lower taxes, then let your elected officials know which municipal services you know longer require.

Life is unfair. People are suffering everyday. Some can't even afford to buy food and clothing let alone taxes. I think our health care sucks! We are dying just trying to buy the essentials for life...

I don't know...

Do you like paved roads, public utilities, education for the nation's youth, and local government that strives to protect your interest--such as subsidized apartments?

I doubt they pay property tax in the remote jungles and wastelands in other parts of the world. Maybe consider a move?

Maybe take the long view of how things work rather than "what's in it for me."

You will have to consider all of the amenities. Police, Fire, Garbage, street maintenance, Library and the people working for the city (who make the city run).

That's the problem. Every body wants to have a piece of you.
You can not own anything in this world - everything is just borrowed - you just have to work for it.
