Yes, the brake lights work, and I tried to take it out of gear without my foot on the brake, too. Next??

It most likely has to do with the brake switch. With the engine on try holding the brake pedal down for a few seconds like 30 or more then try getting out of park. If that doesn't work the switch is probably bad

Do your brake lights work?

It may be the shifter interlock is not operating when the brakes are applied.

ADDED:
Humm.......something may have dropped into the shifter console and blocking the shifter from moving? (Bic lighter)
