Is there anyway to save my computer or is it dead? I tried a system restore, but it still will not load. It just comes up with a dos prompt saying "we apologize for the inconveneince but windows will not start, a recent update or blah blahblah might be to blame." and so on and so on.

You could try the Windows Repair Console. You will need an XP installation disk to do this. If you don't have one a borrowed one will work. It is legal in that you are not installing Windows, just repairing it. Here is what you do.

Put your XP disk into your CD drive and restart your system. This will start the XP installation process. When you come to the screen that asks if you want to install XP or if you would like to “Repair” XP, choose Repair. This will open the repair console command prompt. At the prompt, type: chkdsk /r. (There is a space between the k and the /. Now hit “Enter”. The repair should now start. Allow it to run until it stops. This can take some time, so be patient.

If all goes well, XP will replace any and all missing operating system files.

even if the power did not shut off the lightningcould have struck a lan cable such as one for your internet and affected your computer. one time we had a lightning storm and left the computer on and the hard drive caved. always turn your computer off and shut off power to it when there is a lightning storm.

sooo. reinstall windows or put in the cd and type r for repair.. if that doesent work than somthing inside your computer is dead.
