Why do Pro-McCann people constantly refer to a Portugese 'Secrecy Law' to defend Gerry and Kate from speculation. This so called 'Secrecy Law' (and I doubt there are any Portugese lawyers posting here) only seems to apply to the McCanns and the Tapas 9 and nobody else. Firstly this is a UK Yahoo answers and secondly most of us can only read English and quote from UK media Souces - so why do Pro-McCann people constantly refer to a Portugese 'Secrecy Law' ?

I wouldn't worry about Portugese secrecy laws, in the UK the police only tell you what they want you to know. There is a great deal of secrecy there until they can prove a case. Here in Spain there are three separate police forces and I doubt you'd get anything out of them either.

The secrecy law did apply to Robert Murat, his treatment in the Portuguese press was not the same as his treatment in the British press. It was trial by media for Murat in the British press, but the secrecy law doesn't apply here. The secrecy law does apply in Portugal and you are being hypocrites if you say the treatment of Murat was unfair but the trial by media of the McCanns is fine. The wrong done to Murat here doesn't make it right for the Portuguese press to do the same thing.

I found several articles for you that explain in considerable detail the secrecy laws and why they are in place. It's a different way of doing 'business' and I think it should be respected. They are trying to find proof to make it an airtight case. I guess they don't want to lose a case on a 'technicality' as can happen in the US and the UK

It's just an excuse for them.
We are in England, and there is free speech here.
Portugese secrecy laws did'nt work with Robert Murat did they?

Because there is a secrecy law, that is why the PJ don't in general give public statements about the case. It isn't a so-called secrecy law.

What on earth has that got to do with Yahoo answers?

Angel

It is the anti-McCanns who are trying to suppress free speech on here by giving a massive thumbs down to anyone who doesn't agree with them.

Well said Dr Watson! Nice to see someone who can think clearly.

You say this secrecy law only applies to the McCanns - I would imagine it applies to all Portuguese cases, we just don't hear about the others.

I also think because of the wall of silence from the PP the media (Portuguese as well as English) speculate, Chinese whispers sort of thing.
