The first mate on a ship got drunk on duty for the first time in his life, and the next day, he discovered that the Captain had recorded in the ship's log "Tonight, the first mate was drunk on duty".
Knowing that this record could ruin his career, he begged the captain to change the entry "please sir, I've only ever been drunk this one time". But the Captain said "What is written in the log stays written, and can't be changed", and refused to change the entry.
A week or so later, it was the first mate's turn to record the log, and the next day, the Captain discovered that the Mate had recorded: "Tonight, the Captain was sober on duty.".
